Prepare For Holiday Stress

If we plan ahead about how to handle the challenges of the holiday season, we will be ready to face them accordingly. There are many common challenges of the holiday season, including:

  • Family conflict
  • High-calorie goodies wherever we look
  • Too many events in too little time
  • High expectations
  • Isolation and loneliness
  • Other individual challenges 

Consider whatever YOUR individual challenge is, and figure out healthy ways to cope. Here are some tools to help you overcome whatever challenges you may face this holiday season:

Take care of yourself.  By being aware of your needs during this season, you will fill your emotional and physical energy tanks, making you less likely to overindulge on food or alcohol.

  • Meditate
  • Get enough sleep
  • Exercise
  • Pay attention to your needs
  • Set aside some “down time” 

Plan ahead. Give yourself enough time and energy to prepare ahead of time, and you can handle anything.

  • If you plan ahead for holiday meals, you can shop for groceries without the rush, and be more mindful of what goes into your dishes.
  • If you plan for problems that may arise with entertaining, travelling, family conflict, etc., you have more time to think of solutions and diversions.
  • If you plan a budget, you will be able to save for the expenses that come with the holiday season.
